The English common law countries include England, Australia, New Zealand and few other countries. In these countries, the nature of law program is undergraduate qualification. LL.B is the most common degree to be found in these countries. In Australia and New Zealand, various Universities offer ‘Combined law degrees’ that run for five years. After the undergraduate education, study is very important in order to do practice. The LL.B program is offered at various Universities like the prestigious Oxford University and Cambridge University.

As far as Canada is concerned, any prospective student can get a degree in Bachelor of Law. This program lasts for three years and has a mandatory common coursework for the first year. Second year onwards, you can choose an elective. These electives include business law, international law, criminal law etc. You can choose any one of them in order to complete your degree. The University of McGill and the University of Ottawa offers degree in both common law (LL.B) and civil law (B.C.L). Several Universities like the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia have changed the designation of their degree to ‘J.D’. Even though they have changed the designation of their degrees, they haven’t changed the syllabus and coursework. Some other Universities like New York University and the University of Windsor have designed a joint Canadian LL.B and American J.D programs.

US Law School

In the United State of America, any law college that needs to establish itself as a premier institution must get an approval from the United States American Bar association (ABA). Currently there are 199 ABA approved law colleges in America. And all of them offer post-graduate program. This course lasts for three years at the end of which students earn a ‘Juris Doctor’ degree. In order to get an admission in any ABA approved law college, one must appear for Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Plus, one must have a bachelor’s degree. Compensation as per Proposition 207

Any individual whose land or property is being acquired by the government is entitled to compensation. As per Proposition 207, this compensation can be of two forms; cash compensation or property substitution. Whenever the government takes a property from its owner, it must allocate that individual with a similar substitute for his/her property. That property must be safe and hygienic. The owner can also opt for cash compensation. It all depends on the individual! Proposition 207 also states that an individual is entitled to compensation only if the value of his/her property is reduced due ‘the land use law’. This law governs the use of land. The Proposition 207 defines seven different types of ‘land use laws’ that are exempted from the requirement of compensation.

Controversies
There have been many controversies surrounding this Proposition 207, latest being about the development of a mini-dorm near the campus of University of Arizona. But the state legislative council is dealing with the controversy.

The government holds the right to revoke the ownership of any real estate for the purpose of public use. But as far as the state of Arizona is concerned, Proposition 207 prevents that. Well in a way, it does prevent that but for the good of the citizens. Government has defined a ‘prominent sphere of influence’ which gives government the right to take any property for public use. In such a case, Proposition 207 highlights the constitutional rights of the owner. The Proposition 207 restricts the use of this ‘prominent sphere of influence’ when it is authorized by the government in order to take any property for public use. According to Proposition 207, the term ‘public use’ is defined as; use of the property by the common public only, use of land for public service, use of land in order to destroy the property threatening public safety and health and finally acquiring land which has been abandoned. Only for the purpose of above four points can the government revoke the ownership of any private property. In this way, the Proposition 207 comes to the rescue of a common man!
